TransLink reports that 90% of these trips are to be provided by HandyDART bus. This is only a small increase, but it is an important step in the right direction.<!--more--><br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<strong>HandyDART Riders\u2019 Alliance members Tim Louis and Patrick Maxcy have been appointed to TransLink\u2019s \u201cCustom Transit Service Delivery Review Stakeholder Advisory Committee.\u201d<\/strong> This committee is providing input into options including bringing HandyDART in-house as a TransLink subsidiary. The HandyDART Riders\u2019 Alliance has been working to make HandyDART a TransLink subsidiary or non-profit for years, as this is the only way to get efficient, safe and high quality service.<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>\u00a0BC\u2019 independent Seniors Advocate is doing a survey of HandyDART riders.<\/strong> Half of the riders in the lower mainland will be surveyed, and the results will provide even more evidence that more and better HandyDART service is desperately needed. If you have received a survey, please fill it out today!<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0Provincial <strong>NDP leader John Horrigan has committed to funding the Mayor\u2019s 10-year Transit Vision which includes a 30% increase in HandyDART service.<\/strong> This will help make transit funding, including HandyDART, a key issue in the May 2017 provincial election.<\/p>\n<p><strong>None of this good news would have happened without people like you taking action and demanding better HandyDART service.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The bad news is that HandyDART is not even mentioned in the consultation on Phase One of the Mayors Council 10-Year Vision.<\/strong> In contract, the Mayors Council 10-Year Vision calls for a 30% increase in HandyDART service. We must make sure the need for HandyDART is not swept under the rug. <strong>[<span data-ft=\"{&quot;tn&quot;:&quot;K&quot;}\"><span class=\"UFICommentBody\">Update: More good news! We hear that HandyDART will have a prominent and clear mention in the next draft of the Phase 1 plan. There will be more opportunities for input, and it looks like the final Phase 1 plan will be well worth supporting.<\/span><\/span>]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Question #1 in the survey asks about \u201cany other improvements you&#8217;d like to see.\u201d <strong>Please write about the kind of HandyDART improvements you would like to see. You might want to mention:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0The growing population of seniors means the number of people with disabilities is increasing twice as fast as the rest of the population. HandyDART service must be increased to meet this growing need.<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0HandyDART must either be brought in-house as a TransLink subsidiary or turned over to a non-profit agency.
